High Holy Days Food Bag Appeal

Now is a time when we take stock of the past year and look forward to the next one. It is also a period during which we are encouraged to fulfil the mitzvah of tzedakah. At Mazon, we recognise that many people in Australia lack the food and basic necessities that we take for granted. With this in mind, we are launching our annual Mazon Food Bag Appeal as a direct means of getting food to those who need it most.

The Mazon Food Bag: The appeal has become an annual event with up to 1000 bags of food collected each year from among the membership of Union for Progressive Judaism congregations. In addition to the collection of non-perishable food items, Mazon Australia has, this year alone, provided significant financial support to the Hornsby Women’s Shelter (Sydney), Kosher Meals on Wheels (both Sydney and Melbourne) and Foodbank Australia.

What to put in the Bag: Any non-perishable food can be put in the bag. You might include tins (vegetables, fruit and soup), packets (grains, cereal, pasta and biscuits) or jars and bottles, such as sauce or jam. Kosher/ Israeli food products are encouraged.

What to do with the Bag: Mazon works through an active synagogue network. You can return the bag to any participating synagogue prior to Simchat Torah.

Financial contributions: Mazon also collects funds throughout the year. We encourage people to donate a nominal 3% of the cost of the catering at a simcha to Mazon. To find out more, to get involved or to donate funds you may call Rabbi Gary Robuck, Mazon Chair, at (02) 8765 9812 or contact the UPJ office at 0416 700 613 or This email address is being protected from spambots. On behalf of the many supporters of Mazon, I thank you for your generosity and wish you a sweet, happy and prosperous New Year; and for those in need, a year free from hunger and want.

Mazon, Chair
