Join attendees from around the Union for Progressive Judaism region - and worldwide - as the UPJ welcomes back our community and friends to join IN PERSON for an enriching and exciting conference.
The Beatles sang “8 Days a Week”, Shakespeare wrote “forever and a day” and today our catchphrase for total immersion is “24/7” – the UPJ Biennial titled “Progressing Judaism: 8 Days a Week” will explore how we can expand our Jewish values beyond our Shabbat observance, incorporating our Jewish identity into a myriad of interactions with the world around us. The Biennial Conference will focus on being Jewish in today's complex, modern, fast-paced society, and will feature Rabbi Sergio Bergman, president of the World Union for Progressive Judaism, as well as dynamic and engaging speakers from our region and beyond.

Bet-Olam Jewish Funerals is seeking a person of mature outlook to become a part-time bereavement manager to assist the Executive Director and other staff. You will need to be available on-call and work on rostered weekends. Your role will be family liaison, funeral management and administrative support. Additionally, we would ask you to play an outreach role including educating community organisations about Bet-Olam and its role. This is the most rewarding and fulfilling work and will suit someone who wishes to give back to the community. The role is part time and negotiable and would suit someone with a calm and capable disposition. It’s a vocation, not just a job. This role varies from between 1 to 3 days a week. The role reports to the Executive Director, Rhonda Nirens. For more information contact Rhonda: (03) 9883 6237).
During the High Holy Days, congregations are providing bags to members to fill with healthy non-perishable food items. Please fill and return your bags to your congregation prior to Simchat Torah. You can also make a financial donation to help the work of Mazon by purchasing a "Virtual Mazon Bag": https://www.mazonaustralia.org/sukkot
Rabbi Sergio Bergman will be the featured speaker for the UPJ Biennial, and we are truly inspired by his his many accomplishments. Rabbi Bergman recently said: "I prefer not to use energy on internal divisions (e.g. between Orthodox and Progressive]. I want to welcome those Jews who feel they do not belong. Today, we need to be resilient, flexible and open-minded, especially post-COVID-19. It's a catalyst for change. It's very Jewish, from every bad thing to make a good one."
