The Union for Progressive Judaism and the Council of Progressive Rabbis for Australia, New Zealand and Asia expressed their solidarity with the Jewish communities in Germany in the wake of the Halle Yom Kippur attack, which resulted in two deaths. Emanuel Synagogue will host a tour of the Succah by the Sea sculptures on 25 October at 5.00pm (an installation organised by the Shalom Institute - to learn more click here), which will be the largest display of Judaism in the public sphere to be held in Australia; a special Shabbat Live! service will be held watching the sunset, followed by a BYO picnic dinner.
Susan Kadar, member of Emanuel Synagogue and North Shore Temple Emanuel (NSTE), received the 2019 NSW Senior and Overall Volunteer of the Year Award; she was nominated by the Sydney Jewish Museum for her work translating the diary of Rabbi Andre Kampfner, written just after World War II. Jessica Harrison, NSTE member and immediate past federal leader of Netzer Australia, received the Young Volunteer of the Year Award for her weekly work at the Asylum Seekers Centre. Jessica runs welcome tours for asylum seekers arriving to Australia and provides them with referrals for necessary assistance with essentials, such as clothing, furniture and paying bills.
