WHAT'S ON

History

The Progressive Movement began in earnest in Australia almost 80 years ago with the formation of a synagogue in Melbourne which is now Temple Beth Israel. With the establishment of Temple Emanuel (now Emanuel Synagogue), and later the North Shore Temple Emanuel in Sydney, the Australian Union for Progressive Judaism was formed.

Shortly thereafter, upon expanding to New Zealand with congregations in Wellington and Auckland, the name became the Australian and New Zealand Union for Progressive Judaism (ANZUPJ). In more recent times, a number of Progressive congregations in Asia affiliated with the ANZUPJ, so the name changed once more and we are now known as the Union for Progressive Judaism.
