WHAT'S ON

High Holy Days in Myanmar

Rabbi Fred Morgan spent Yom Kippur with the Jewish group in Yangon, Myanmar. Here he is pictured with Sammy Samuels, head of the Jewish community of Myanmar, and Sam Glatman, British businessman and cantorial soloist, in front of the amud in the 115-year old Musmeah Yeshua Synagogue.

Rabbi Morgan writes, "The indigenous Jewish community in Myanmar is tiny but it is supplemented on the holy days by ex-patriate business people, Israeli embassy staff and tourists from Israel and around the world.  Our Yom Kippur services included the Israeli ambassador and his wife, back-packers and visitors from as far afield as Canada and Sydney.  Sam Glatman's singing of Kol Nidre was heavenly, and we included readings from the new Mishkan T'shuva to enliven our prayers from the older Conservative movement Machzor.  A highlight of the morning was a study session on Jonah.  The break-fast was catered by Sammy Samuels, stalwart of the Myanmar community, whose family of Iraqi origin has tended to the upkeep of the synagogue for five decades.  The gentility and generosity of the Burmese people are very special.  Tourists to Yangon are welcome to visit the shul, which is in the downtown area in narrow 26th Street just off the major Mahabandoola Road."
