Happy Chanukah from the UPJ

They say a tiger can't change its stripes and a leopard can't change its spots ... but this zebra definitely has been affected by the miracle of Chanukah - and it's uncannily similar to the UPJ logo.

Temple David in Perth (www.templedavid.org.au) is hosting a Family Extravaganza on the first night of Chanukah, with special activities for kids, as well as a seventh night Kabbalat Shabbat Chanukah lighting, followed by an Oneg at which time the mezuzah will be affixed to their newly renovated Social Hall.

The Leo Baeck Centre for Progressive Judaism (www.lbc.org.au) is hosting an Outreach program on the first day of Chanukah, featuring dreidel games, donuts, latkes and a re-telling of the story of the Maccabees. Also that evening, LBC will celebrate the second night of Chanukah with monologues and songs presented by the King David School VCE Theatre Studies students.

Temple Beth Israel (www.tbi.org.au)  has invited all members to light their chanukiyot on the bimah during services on Friday 14 December. At Shabbat services the next morning the congregation will hold a special Volunteers Shabbat, at which time congregational volunteers will be recognized and the new board will be inducted, followed a special lunch.

Congregants will gather at Camp Cove beach for a picnic, beach games and chanukiyah sand-sculpting contest hosted by Emanuel Synagogue (www.emanuel.org.au). Earlier in December, the congregation also hosted an olive-oil pressing workshop.

North Shore Temple Emanuel (www.nste.org.au) has created a 25-minute short film that will be presented three times a day during the eight days of Chanukah on the giant screen at the Chatswood Concourse. During the evening screenings a virtual chanukiah lighting will be included.  On the evening of 13 December, the screening will include Chanukah songs, a children’s treasure hunt, dreidel games and gelt.
