Temple Sinai defaced with swastikas

The UPJ received the shocking news that Temple Sinai in Wellington New Zealand was defaced with swastikas on 23 January. Temple Sinai president Matthew Smith said: "While it may be a random act of anti-Semitism, with the upcoming United Nations International Holocaust Remembrance Day on 27 January and the Fifth World Holocaust Forum, it does not seem entirely coincidental." Response to Human Rights Legislation Amendment

The UPJ provided a response to the request from the Executive Council of Australian Jewry's second exposure draft of the Human Rights Legislation Amendment (Freedom of Religion) Bill 2019. The essence is that we are unconvinced of the benefits of the proposed legislation and see a number of its aspects as antithetical to Jewish values. Above all, our Jewish values which we are free to exercise today ought not be restricted in operation by legislation that is motivated by preserving freedoms.
