UPJ offers second Governance Course
The UPJ is pleased to announce its second Governance Course for Board members and potential Board members throughout our region. The course will be held on 11 and 25 August and 8 and 22 September, 2.00-4.00pm AEST Melbourne/Sydney time (TBC). Managing a congregation is a complex process and this program provides the basics across four important areas in four sessions of two hours, two weeks apart on:
- Jewish values and roles of the rabbi, staff, and the board;
- Governance and the role of board members, including legal responsibilities, compliance and risk management;
- Financial planning and performance management; strategy and operational implementation;
- Board recruitment and induction; maximising the effectiveness of the Board.

The course is interactive and all participants will work on a project related to their area of interest after the course is completed. It will be run by David Fishel (pictured), Director of Positive Solutions, which specialises in governance and board development in the non-for-profit sector. Course content is developed in concert with the UPJ, including case studies of issues confronting synagogues today.
The course is subsidised by the World Union for Progressive Judaism. Cost to participants is $250 AUD, which is usually paid by their synagogue. For further information and potential fee reductions, please contact: Larry.Lockshin@upj.org.au.
